As an ex professional athlete, I learned all about the importance of Food, Fitness and Focus from the best people in the world in each of these fields.

Maintaining physical fitness was a huge part of my daily life during the years I travelled the world representing Ireland as a sprint hurdler. Since retiring from international athletics and becoming a mum, I have had to find ways to build fitness in around my busy daily routine at work and home.

As a sprint hurdler, I was used to running shorter distances. So when I decided to do a Couch to 5K, I had to train myself to run for longer. I have used that experience to put together my own Beginner’s Guide to Running 5K, full of tips and advice that helped me along the way.

In conjunction with professional personal trainer, I have developed a range of workouts and programs to help you incorporate fitness into your life on a daily basis, to tone your body, gain strength and to achieve and maintain your optimal weight.

After the age of 30, we begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% of muscle mass per decade. The good news is that we can prevent much of the muscle loss related to age, even at an advanced age, with a nutritionally balanced diet and appropriate exercise. Resistance or muscle strength training targeting all of the major muscle groups will prevent muscle loss, increase fitness and tone your body.

There is sometimes a fear of weight training, particularly among women, who worry about bulking up, but the reality is that it is really difficult for women to bulk up with weights and the benefits of this form of exercise are huge for women. In my opinion, this is by far the best form of exercise for women who want to look and feel better and improve your overall health.
