Welcome to Week 7

When and where you get your food from is entirely dictated by your lifestyle. Prepping all your food at home is very doable but very often is simply not a reality. Aim for a combination of both.

My top tips for achieving your health goals when eating out are as follows:

  1. Be aware of portion sizes – you know what portions you eat at home so be conscious of the sizes when you are eating out. Ask whoever is serving you or check out someone elses food and see if the portion is bigger than you would normally eat. If portions are big ask for a slightly smaller portion and maybe extra vegetables. I find if the food is on my plate I just end up eating it so I’d rather ask for what I want before it arrives!
  2. Variety is really important in your diet – different foods give different nutritional benefits. I tend to order food out that I don’t make at home or that I find more challenging to make at home. I order fish a lot or often the vegetarian option when I’m out because they are not my go too at home. When I discover amazing new ingredients, I will start to experiment with them at home.
  3. Your life is about balance – eating is a really social experience and one that you should be enjoying. It’s great to be conscious of what you are eating but it’s really important to be balanced. If you are doing well with your food and following a balanced approach which is what this plan is all about then going for a fancy dinner with lots of indulgent foods isn’t a big deal! Enjoy the occasional indulgence, just make sure it’s not a weekly activity.
